Wearing Your Baby is a self-funded video made by Dunedin, NZ couple Anna Hughes and Wayne Johnson.

Wayne is a Media Producer and Anna is a part time facilitator of the Enviroschools programme in Dunedin, NZ. We currently share the parenting of our 6 and 3 year old boys.

The Vision:

To combine our passion for babywearing and it’s benefits with our personal skills to create a simple, ‘real’, instructional video so families new to babywearing have a resource to refer to in their own homes. It is about demystifying babywearing, making it less overwhelming and giving people a place to start as well as continue their babywearing journey.  Soooo…

The first shoot was slightly disastrous and we almost pulled the pin.  Those in the film industry are not kidding when they say ‘Never work with babies or animals.  Phew, challenging alright!  Babies pick up on your nervousness and are very wary of all the lights and equipment.

So we changed tact and decided this production would be less formal, a bit ad hoc at times, in a variety of locations – outside whenever we could!  Babies love being outside and so do we.  They are a bit happier about being thrown around and lumped on and off someone’s body, even someone they don’t know, so long as they can be outside enjoying the sights and sounds!  We decided that our consistency would be in our inconsistency!

The Rest of the Team!

We didn’t want to do it alone. We wanted to add diversity, personality and genuineness to the production. So we asked some other babywearing families to help us.

Mandy and Family

Mandy Mok owns Snugglez Baby Carriers. Along with her Mum she makes a more modern version of the Asian Carrier the Mei tai. Mandy agreed to present this section of the video. You can check out Mandy’s website at http://www.snugglez.co.nz

Nick Tracey Interview image copy

Nick Duvell-Smith and Tracy Botica are special people to us. Tracy and I worked together as Sea Kayak guides in our youth. She was one of the midwives for both of our children and Nick was the Kindergarten teacher of our eldest child. They are passionate about attachment parenting and were some of the first to lead the resurgence of babywearing in Dunedin with the use of a prototype of the Third Arm Ring sling which is no longer being made. They agreed to present the Pouch and Ring sling section. We were excited to have Nick involved representing babywearing Dad’s. A classic moment with Tracy during filming.

Shot of back carry with Manduca _ Briony in Gardens

Briony Murchie provided a genuine, relaxed style that matches her personality. I noticed her wearing her youngest son in a soft structured carrier, asked her how she found it and then whether she wanted to be involved in our project. She presents the soft structured carrier section that looks at a few of MANY of this style of carrier on the market. Click here to view a funny wee moment in Briony and Matt’s interview

Mantasmall

Anna Hughes is a bit of a wrapper. Wayne enjoyed using the wrap around sling too though he spent his time behind the camera! Perhaps it’s the climber in her. She enjoys the art of securing things safely. She also presents the Improvised Carriers section and is passionate about supporting affordable babywearing for all. You don’t need the latest carrier on the market to wear your baby! In fact they couldn’t care less so long as they’re safely strapped to Mum or Dad!
